“Every tree was a friendly monster,
a city exploding in spring,
our new home.”

FRIENDLY MONSTER PRESS
is a new venture from me, SCOTT CANNON, (Picture Frame Press 2022-2025).

I’m so excited about all the books we plan to put out in 2026, all the events we get to be a part of, all of the bookstores I’ll get to hang out in.

I draw, paint, write poetry and short fiction, do woodworking, play music, and publish whatever I want to with my friends. I’m happy you’re here. Sign up for the mailing list at the bottom of the page and I’ll let you know when stuff comes out.

Scott Cannon, a Portland artist and publisher, stands with a 90's Japanese road bike, Centurion Iron Man Dave Scott model painted in black. The cherry blossom trees are in full bloom in Tom McCall waterfront park.

What makes Friendly Monster Press different?

We here at FMP galatic headquarters, meaning me in my dark bedroom, typing this under the shadow of guitars that Illy and I have just dusted off to learn Blitzkreig Bop, are not your average small press. Nor are we your small average press. We might not be any of those words, really.

Making books is (or at least should be) fun, because it allows me to collaborate with someone over the course of a season, working on something that we both care deeply about, and in the end, a new Work (capital W) is created, born, brought forth, just the best we could do in that moment. I love that. I want that to keep happening.

What’s not fun for me is social media. I don’t social media. I just can’t. It would break what’s left of my soul. It’s a disadvantage in business to not be on social media because I have no way to tell you what’s happening except for this website, which is hard to promote without feeding the Zuckmonster.

So there’s my quandry: I love making art, including publishing books with my friends, and I love showing that art to you here…but I don’t want to promote any of it in the traditional way.

Here’s my solution. I’m just gonna do my thing. Other people can do social media. FMP Authors can and do market their Work in the way they prefer, and I will market here.

Someday, probably overnight because an embarassing video of me, this website will be the hottest thing on the internet for 12 hours, and then a dancing chicken will usurp the spotlight and I will go back to painting ever better Bart Simpsons.

I haven’t figured out how to manage accepting submissions yet, so as of now, it’s only stuff already in the pipeline that I’m putting out in 2026. It’s an exciting prospect to know that at some point I will be accepting submissions though.

Yahtzee.
